If you’re thinking about bringing your dog to your family photo session I’m always happy to include them. They’re part of your day-to-day life, and for a lot of families, it wouldn’t feel complete without them.
That said, adding a dog can change the flow of a session a bit, so a little preparation goes a long way in keeping things relaxed and easy.

Here are a few simple tips to help:
1. Give them a little exercise beforehand
A short walk before your session can make a big difference. It helps take the edge off so they’re more relaxed when we start.
2. Bring a leash
If your family photos are taking place outdoors, bring a leash. We’ll usually start with them on leash and then decide what makes sense from there. It just gives us flexibility depending on the space. Many places in and around Vancouver require dogs to be on-leash the whole time.
3. Pack a couple of treats or a favourite toy
Nothing complicated just something familiar that helps get their attention when we need it.
4. Keep expectations simple
They don’t need to sit perfectly or look at the camera. Some of the best moments come from them just being themselves alongside you.
5. Have a backup plan
If possible, it can help to have someone available to take your dog for a short break partway through the session. That way we can get a mix of photos with and without them without feeling rushed.
Including your dog should feel like a natural extension of your session not something that adds stress. We’ll keep things flexible, follow their energy, and make it work in a way that feels comfortable for everyone.
If you’re unsure whether your dog is a good fit for your session, feel free to ask. I’m always happy to talk it through with you.
