Vancouver Daycare Photographer | How to Prep Your Kid for Daycare Photo Day | Meliza Orellana Photography

Professional Vancouver daycare photography capturing natural child expressions

Daycare photo day is a chance to capture your child’s personality just as they are right now. A little preparation can go a long way in helping your child feel comfortable, confident, and ready to smile… or not! Either way, their true personalities will be captured.

Below are simple tips to help you prepare your child for daycare photo day, including what to wear, mess-free snacks to pack, and how to set the tone for a great experience.

What to Wear for Daycare Photo Day Photos

When it comes to photo day outfits, simple always photographs best. Neutral tones, soft textures, and comfortable clothing help keep the focus on your child’s face and expressions.

I use three classic backdrops for daycare photography: beige, light blue, and dark blue. Your centre’s director would have chosen the backdrop for your centre.

Here’s what works beautifully with each one:

Beige Backdrop — Soft & Timeless

Best colours:

  • Cream, ivory, beige
  • Soft browns
  • Muted sage or olive
  • Warm greys
  • Soft pink
  • Soft blue

Colours to avoid:

  • Bright white (can look harsh)
  • Busy prints or logos
  • Neon

This backdrop is perfect for a natural, warm look and works well with cozy knits, simple dresses, or classic tops.

Light Blue Backdrop — Fresh & Playful

Best colours:

  • White or off-white
  • Navy
  • Soft grey
  • Muted green or denim
  • Pink

Colours to avoid:

  • Light blue (can blend into the background)
  • Neon colours

This backdrop pairs beautifully with clean, classic outfits and adds a bright, cheerful feel.

Dark Blue Backdrop — Bold & Classic

Best colours:

  • Beige, cream, or camel
  • Light grey
  • Soft pastels
  • Muted earth tones
  • Greens

Colours to avoid:

  • Very dark navy or black
  • High-contrast graphics
  • Neon colours

Dark blue creates a timeless, studio-style portrait.

Comfort Matters

Choose clothing your child can move and sit in comfortably. If something feels itchy, tight, or unfamiliar, it may show on their face.

Pro tip: Dress them at home if possible. Last-minute changes at daycare can add stress.

Mess-Free Snacks to Pack on Daycare Photo Day

If your child tends to get hungry before photos, a small snack can help — just make sure it’s clean and mess-free.

Great photo-day snack ideas:

  • Plain crackers or rice cakes
  • Dry cereal (like Cheerios)
  • Cheese cubes
  • Apple slices

Snacks to avoid:

  • Chocolate
  • Yogurt
  • Sauces or dips

These can stain clothes, hands, or faces right before photos.

How to Help Your Child Feel Comfortable

A relaxed child photographs best. These small adjustments can make daycare photo day calmer and more enjoyable for everyone involved. A few small things can make a big difference:

Talk About Photo Day Ahead of Time

Let your child know:

  • Someone will take their picture
  • It will be quick and fun
  • They don’t have to “perform” or smile perfectly

Keep it light and positive.

Let Their Personality Shine

It’s okay if your child:

  • Smiles big
  • Grins shyly
  • Looks thoughtful
  • Or, even looks grumpy

There’s no “right” expression. Natural moments often make the most meaningful photos.

Prioritize Rest

A good night’s sleep and a calm morning routine help children feel their best. If photo day falls on a busy morning, even a slightly earlier bedtime can help.
